Lesson Notes with EVERY exercise đ
You donât have to second guess whether youâre doing an exercise right or not because every single training you receive comes with lesson notes.
These notes break down the common challenges you may face when working through your singing exercises and guide you on how to correct your technique and sound. A professional vocal coach carefully writes every single lesson note to ensure the notes are communicated clearly and that they are simple for you to apply in your singing practice. Weâve included an example below of the lesson notes you receive with Sing Text.
-
Notes: This exercise will challenge your voice in your ability to smooth your transitions and hold notes out steadily. Steady holds do not mean your voice needs to be void of vibrato. Vibrato is a sign of your vocal folds vibrating healthily, so do not fear vibrato (also, do not feel incapable if you donât have much vibratoâŚyou donât need to force it!).
When we talk about steady holds, we talk about your ability to control your voice. Solid unwavering pitch, your volume is under control, and you are not running out of air.
The Smooth Hums are a wonderful way to ensure your soft palate has a nice lift. Hums naturally help you lift your soft palate, relax your tongue, lower the larynx, and widen the pharynx. The important takeaway is that they help you achieve a nice open-throat position that you want as you sing.
A lot of these exercises move slowly, so pay attention to your transitions, keep your body relaxed, and monitor your posture to help promote proper alignment for optimal singing conditions. The Na Na Na Steps will be the most articulation youâll be doing in this training. Your tongue and soft palate will be doing a lot of movement here. Stray away from tensing up your jaw, it can be easily done when singing an ânâ.
Youâll enjoy the Oo Melody. It sounds pretty and feels lovely. Smooth, steady movements between notes are the goal here. You can even play around with the volume on this, try growing louder in volume by the end of each phrase or maybe swell in volume towards the middle of the phrase then bring it back down quietly. Have fun with it! As you go up higher with this you will likely need to modify the vowel as the Oo can tend to feel tight the higher you go. There is no right or wrong way to modify it, itâs all about what feels best for you. Your Oo may sound more like an Oh on the higher notes or even an Ah. Experiment with it and find what feels best for you!
With the Backwards Arpeggio, make smooth transitions your focus. Starting a phrase on a higher note each time can sometimes throw you for a loop so if you are struggling to hit the pitch clearly or find yourself sort of sliding up to it, make sure to take a moment to think about the note before you sing it. Our brains signal to our larynx what the pitch is and this translates into how our vocal folds vibrate to efficiently sing the correct pitch. So, if you are having a hard time nailing the starting note of the arpeggio, try to think about what the pitch is rather than just shooting from the hip with it.
Maybe youâre thinking:
âThis is all cool, but I still want to work with a vocal coachâŚâ
We want to make sure you feel confident as you embark on your vocal training journey with Sing Text, thatâs why we created Vocal Check-Ins.
What is a Vocal Check-In?
A Vocal Check-In gives you the ability to receive personalized feedback on your singing and technique from a REAL professional vocal coach. Hereâs how it works:
âď¸You choose a day & time that fits your schedule, weâll text you at your chosen time with a link to begin your guided Vocal Check-In.
âď¸ Youâll answer questions from your vocal coach about how your voice is doing, and how your practice has been going and youâll be able to ask your coach any questions you may have.
âď¸ Youâll record a video of yourself singing through a song you are currently working on and click submit.
After submitting your Vocal Check-In, within 48 hours your vocal coach will get back to you with their notes for you. Your coach will send an audio message along with practice notes to your email (donât worry, weâll text you when theyâve reviewed your Vocal Check-In). Theyâll share things they want you to work on in your singing practice, correct your technique, improve your stylistic/artistic expression in the song, exercise recommendations, theyâll demonstrate things if needed, and answer your questions.
In a traditional voice lesson, an instructor will have you sing through exercises 40-50% of the lesson, and the rest of your time is spent applying all that you are learning to a song. We believe vocal coaches are an essential part of your vocal training journey but we also know that voice lessons are expensive and they usually come with strict cancellation policies and purchase minimums.
Having a vocal coach used to only be for those who had the time and/or money to invest in weekly lessons but that doesnât have to be the case any longer. Now, having a vocal coach can be for anyone!
P.S. ELITE members automatically receive weekly Vocal Check-Ins with their membership đ
P.P.S. Vocal Check-Ins are available a la carte ($25 each) đ˛
P.P.P.S. You donât have to be a Sing Text member to do a Vocal Check-Inđ¤Ż
